The discovery of Punic coins is a frequent feature in the archaeological documentation of the necropoleis in the western Mediterranean, even if it is not always fully usable due to the lack of attention that can be found also in recent excavation reports. The generic diction of “Carthaginian coin” and the mere recording of the type and position of coins in the funeral goods make it difficult to define their role and significance with respect to the funerary ritual followed. The project “ sacred Coins” want to propose a revision of the data on the Punic and Neopunic necropoleis, starting from the documentation of Carthage and the comparison with the discoveries in the funerary areas of the western Mediterranean.
