Identifying the sacred value of coins in the different archaeological contexts examined is quite complex.
As for their use in necropolises, it is not just a matter of fulfilling the function of the so-called “Charon’s Pence”. The low economic value of the coins found (almost exclusively bronze) indicates a symbolic function. The
reading of the coin nests is more complex, for which a distinction must be made between depositions contextual to the burial and later depositions in some cases also interpretable as emergency hiding places. The process of interpretation of the value of the coin in the Punic tophets, as well as in the votive and foundation deposits even in areas not directly affected by the Punic influence, is ongoing.
For this reason, it is interesting to carry out the survey by geographical areas as it can bring out ‘regionalizations’ of votive customs, and allow to identify the role of substrate and adstrate components.
